Can a Live Wedding Illustrator Draw Children? (And Why They're Often My Favourite Guests!)

One of the questions I occasionally get asked is:

"Will the children enjoy it too?"

The short answer?

Absolutely.

In fact, some of my favourite moments at weddings have involved the youngest guests.

Children are naturally curious

One thing I've noticed after illustrating weddings across Cheshire and the UK is that children are fascinated by the drawing process.

While adults often don't want to interrupt, children are wonderfully honest.

They'll wander over to my illustration station, watch every stroke on the iPad and ask questions like:

"Is that me?"

"How do you draw so fast?"

"Can I watch?"

Their excitement is infectious, and it's always lovely seeing them so interested in something creative.

Watching the portrait come to life

Unlike a camera, a portrait isn't instant.

Guests can watch it slowly take shape, from the first sketch to the finished illustration.

For children especially, there's something magical about seeing themselves appear on the screen.

By the time the portrait is printed, they're often counting down the seconds until they can hold it in their hands.

They usually become my biggest supporters

It's funny how often the children become my little assistants (without even realising it!).

They'll proudly tell other guests,

"She's drawing people over there!"

Or they'll bring their grandparents or parents over because they want them to have a portrait too.

Those small interactions always make me smile.

One Guest I'll Never Forget

One wedding in particular has always stayed with me.

A teenage guest quietly came over to my illustration table and spent most of the afternoon sitting beside me, simply watching me draw.

He wasn't waiting for his own portrait.

He was genuinely interested in the process.

Every now and then, he'd ask a question about the brushes I was using or how I decided which details to draw first.

We chatted throughout the day, and I was more than happy to share my process with him.

As someone who taught herself to draw, I know how much encouragement can mean.

If watching me create live illustrations inspires a child or teenager to pick up a pencil and start drawing, then that's incredibly special to me.

After all, you never know where a little bit of inspiration might lead.

A keepsake parents don't expect

One of the nicest things about live wedding guest illustration is that it's not just for the couple.

Parents are often delighted to receive a portrait of their children dressed up for such a special occasion.

Children grow so quickly, and weddings are one of the rare occasions where everyone is dressed beautifully and celebrating together.

Years later, that little portrait often becomes a reminder of a stage of life that passed far too quickly.

Every child is different

Some children are full of confidence and pose straight away.

Others are a little shy and prefer to watch from a distance before coming over later.

That's completely fine.

I never expect anyone to sit still or pose for long.

I usually take reference photos naturally throughout the day, allowing everyone to enjoy the celebration while I create their portrait afterwards.

It keeps the experience relaxed and means nobody has to miss out on spending time with family and friends.

More than entertainment

People often describe live wedding illustration as entertainment, and it certainly brings plenty of smiles throughout the day.

But for me, it's also about creating memories for every generation.

From grandparents to toddlers, everyone becomes part of the story.

And I think that's one of the reasons couples choose live illustration—it helps every guest feel included.
