From Peggy's Sketchbook #1: The One Wedding Keepsake Guests Don't Expect (But Always Love)

When couples first enquire about live wedding illustration, they often tell me they're looking for something a little different.

Something interactive.

Something personal.

Something their guests will genuinely enjoy.

But after illustrating weddings across Cheshire and beyond, I've realised the thing guests remember most isn't actually watching me draw.

It's the moment they realise the portrait in my hand is theirs.

It's always the reactions I remember

Every wedding is different, but one thing never really changes.

Someone will look at their portrait...

Smile.

Laugh.

Turn to the person next to them and say,

"Look, it's us!"

Others quietly study every little detail before grinning from ear to ear.

Those few seconds are honestly my favourite part of the day.

A keepsake they weren't expecting

Most guests arrive expecting great food, music and a wonderful celebration.

Very few expect to leave with a personalised illustration of themselves.

That's what makes live wedding illustration feel so special.

It's a surprise.

And because it's unexpected, the reaction is often even more memorable.

More than just a drawing

People sometimes ask me whether I simply copy a photograph.

The answer is... not really.

Of course I use reference photos, but while I'm drawing, I'm constantly looking beyond them.

Is a curl sitting in the right place?

Has their necklace disappeared behind their hair?

Could I straighten that tie just a little?

Does their smile feel like them?

It's often the smallest details that make a portrait feel personal.

I don't want to change how people look

Occasionally someone will jokingly ask,

"Can you make me look younger?"

Or...

"Can you make me a little slimmer?"

I always smile because I completely understand.

But over the past year, after illustrating well over a thousand wedding guests, I've realised something.

Every single person has something beautiful about them already.

Sometimes it's their smile.

Sometimes it's the way they look at their partner.

Sometimes it's the confidence in the way they stand.

Those are the things I try to capture.

Because years from now, I don't want someone to look at their portrait and think,

"I looked thinner."

I want them to look at it and remember exactly how that day felt.

The portraits that stay on the wall

One of the nicest compliments I ever receive is hearing that guests have framed their portraits at home.

Not because it's a perfect drawing.

But because it reminds them of one of the happiest days they shared with people they love.

To me, that's what makes live wedding illustration different.

It's not just entertainment for the wedding day.

It's a keepsake that carries the memory long after the flowers have faded and the cake has been eaten.
